Hello to all users here ,

First off all Big Thx to Ramirez. It's a really very good idea to produce this Forum...

I´ve discovered this forum at myspace....

But my problem is, that i need a little tutorial to arrange funky swinging percussion in FL studio! For Example i like sounds by Ramirez , Funkagenda, Hugo , etc ...

I would be pleased if someone could help to master these things and how i get a good quality of sound??

Maybe someone could help me!?!?!

Thanks a lot

Best Regards to all user here!!

Few things I find are essential:

- Use some kind of swing/shuffle (Guru drum machine is good for this, but I'm sure FL studio will have some way of adding this to your beats.)

- Send all your drums to a single drum channel and compress it, I like 'the glue' for this.

That way you get funky, swung beats that have a nice lot of punch and sound 'gelled' together by the compressor.

Another recommendation for Guru here. It allows you to really easily apply a number of different groove profiles to your beat (or just certain elements in it). In FL studio, if you are using the Piano Roll to 'draw in' your beat, you can choose 'Edit' (I think) -> 'Quantize' and select from a range of groove patterns there.

Yeah, Guru is great for swing.

Only thing I find annoying using it in Live7 is I cant then apply the same groove to other elements of the track from other VSTs/hardware.

I know live8 lets you do that, but it seems a lot of cash for that one feature I'd find useful. So yeah if you can, use swing/shuffle in your DAW so you can keep it constant across the whole track if its an option.

- Send all your drums to a single drum channel and compress it, I like 'the glue' for this.

maybe not all your drums - I find it useful sometimes to have the kick seperate, helps you get that big booming club sound...

I use loads of busses/aux's - sometimes I'll also seperate hi perc, low perc, snares, hats etc into busses, then bus those and compress, then add kicks into a drum mix bus with a subtle compressor on it to gel it all together a bit...

Most importantly experiment a lot and find out what works for you!

Totally what kristoph said, sometimes two light compressors are better than one hard one, and experiment with different circuit types, e.g VCA for fast and punchy, FET warms it up, give it a nice tone, TUBE - like it says, fattens up the sound and will again richen the tone and OPTICAL for a slow subtle compression. Then work your settings like quick attack and/or release and how much you want to compress by.

I like to keep my kick and bass in mono, keep the kick seperate from my perc busses and lately i've been sending the kick and the bass to a buss together with a little gel on that buss.

You could do the total opposite to all the above - just trust your ears, if it works then do it. :)

Check the humanizing presets on the top left hand side of the scroll menu! There are some great preset shuffled patterns, swing, triplets, all with humanized velocity and spacing for a less mechanical feel.

Use them as a template and them move stuff around once you've got an idea of how it's working.
