View Full Version : Running an external hardware synth through FL Studio - advice?
Just bought my first hardware synth (Redsound Darkstar) and am looking at incorporating it into my FL Studio setup.
I think from what I've read in the manual that it's a case of running MIDI cables to and from my soundcard to the synth, and then audio cables from the synth to the card for output.
Just wondering if anyone's got any experience in doing this? Seems most FL users I speak to don't use h'ware in their setup :(

Hi, welcome to the forums!
Afraid I don't use FL Studio, have never even looked at it - but I can tell you how we get around the problem in most DAWs if that helps at all...
You will normally create a MIDI track for sending your notes out to the synth, and an AUDIO track for the audio that comes back from the synth... will need to set the input of this audio track to whichever input your synth is plugged into, and look for a "record enable" or "monitor" switch on the track - this will allow you to hear the output of your synth...
then when you come to record or bounce the track, it should render the audio onto the audio track...
That's how you'd do it in Pro Tools and older versions of Logic and Cubase... These days Logic (and afaik Cubase??) use "Instrument" tracks - where you use only 1 track instead of 2... In Logic there's an "External Instrument" plugin where you set the midi destination, and the audio input, and then it pretty much just behaves like a softsynth...
Sorry for the non-FL specific reply but I hope there's something useful in there that sets you on your way to fixing the problem!
