Easy All,

At the moment I'm in the middle of laying down a tasty little Disco/tech tune and want put a few good quality horn sounds in it.

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good sample CD or plug-in as I know brass sounds can normally be a bit tricky.

I'm going to try out the East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Brass samples/plug-in but what else is good?

To be honest paul, that east west thing will no doubt be quality, as most things from east west are top quality.

However, sampling horns from old tracks can often be even better than a clean cut brass plugin.

If you work a bit of magic on some synths you can get a quality brass sound, rob papens albino has a lot of horn presets that can be tweaked - do it right and you got yourself some bad ass hornage!

I still say though that if you sample horns you just got that little bit of extra magic to them.

Hope that helps. :)

Great stuff Tom, thanks for the reply. I'll check out the what the Albino Brass has to offer and have a have a poke around.

I've always thought the bass sounds were quite good on the Albino until I recently discovered the mighty power of Trilian that blows it out of the water!

+1 from me for nicking brass from old records - preferably through an autofilter and a s/c comp :D

Paul - Trillian is good, other good bass boxes to try are Rob Papen SubBoomBass and the Korg Legacy Collection!

Have you tried the Arturia Brass plug in? I have used it a few times now and it's quite inspiring. It's a physical modelling synthesis plug as opposed to a sample and play unit - only thing I seem to remember is it's not too good at ensemble instruments and mainly concentrates on single instruments so can sound a big weak - Quite realistic though.
I know you're a fan of the Arturia range so give the demo a try. Failing that there's some great brass samples in The Kontact 3 library if you have that. I'm sure though you'll no doubt do well with the East West stuff - always quality.

Thanks for the advise Dean. I've heard a few demo's of the Arturia Brass plug-in but never had a play.

I am a fan of their products so I'll have to check it out in my next session.

Also, good idea with the Kontakt 3 library :-)
